JOHN TENNIEL

STYLE DESCRIPTION: A pencil sketch and woodblock print style
John Tenniel (1820 – 1914) is the original illustrator who brought Lewis Carroll's stories to life, creating all the artwork for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. His iconic illustrations are inseparable from the stories themselves, defining iconic characters like Alice, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Cheshire Cat. The original story was often light on visual details so Tenniel had to invent his own characterizations, drawing from a vast range of sources, including fine art and natural history. He sketched the original drawings in pencil, but retraced the final work in black ink. As the novel moved into press, his drawings were carved into wood blocks to create electrotype copies for publishers. Tenniel’s childlike imagination and crosshatch style laid the visual foundation that would define every reimagination of this story for decades to come including Infinite Wonderland. ------- Above is a small set of illustrations from John Tenniel’s original collection of artwork for the story. His original images vary in format and size. These selected nine were curated and cropped square to help better fine-tune the AI model.
